Cross River is a state in South-South Nigeria, bordering Cameroon to the east. Its name is derived from the Cross River, which passes through the state and its capital is Calabar.
Calabar was originally named Akwa Akpa, in Efik language. The city is adjacent to the Calabar and Great Kwa rivers and creeks of the Cross River (from its inland delta).
Calabar is a port city in southern Nigeria, near the Cameroon border. It sits on a hill near the Calabar River and the Cross River delta. It was once one of Africa’s biggest ports for trafficking enslaved people, and later a major exporter of palm oil.
The capital for some people is an acronym which stands for “Come And Live (Love) And Be At Rest”. It is impressive and distinctive in outlook for which even a first-time visitor would readily agree it stands out among other state capitals in the country.
The hospitality of the people is equal to none in the country, no wonder so many young people who find themselves in the city find it difficult to leave.
Administratively, the city is divided into Calabar Municipal and Calabar South Local Government Areas. It has an area of 406 square kilometres (157 sq mi) and a population of 371,022 as at the 2006 census.
Calabar is often described as the tourism capital of Nigeria, especially due to several initiatives implemented during the administration of Donald Duke (1999–2007), which made the city the cleanest and environmentally friendliest city in Nigeria.
Tribes in Calabar such as the Efiks, the Efuts and the Quos, have the best cuisine one can think of in the country. Afang, Edikaikong, Mkpa nkwukwo quickly comes to mind.
Calabar women have a reputation. From their cooking to their sexual prowess, they are well known and stereotyped.

Some women from other tribes whose men leave for Calabar women claim that their men do not do so in their true senses. They try to accuse Calabar women of fetish acts that lure the men. But that’s far from the truth.
The truth is that Effik women charm you with love and a life of cleanliness that you simply get attached to their service in all ramifications.
Aside from their elegance and sexuality, the Efik woman is clean inside and outside and this is romantically alluring.
Generally, Calabar women are a mark of the attribute that makes the city special.
